Med andra ord \u00e4r det en omvandling av v\u00e4rmeenergi till elektrisk energi n\u00e4r v\u00e4rmeenergin r\u00f6r sig fr\u00e5n h\u00f6g till l\u00e5g temperatur. Om den ena sidan av enheten h\u00e5lls vid h\u00f6g temperatur och den andra vid l\u00e5g temperatur uppst\u00e5r ett v\u00e4rmefl\u00f6de \u00f6ver enheten fr\u00e5n sidan med h\u00f6g temperatur till den med l\u00e5g temperatur.<br \/>\nMed andra ord kommer v\u00e4rmeenergi att fl\u00f6da in i elementet vid sidan med h\u00f6g temperatur och avges fr\u00e5n sidan med l\u00e5g temperatur. N\u00e4r detta sker kommer en del av den v\u00e4rmeenergi som fl\u00f6dar genom elementet inte att avges utan omvandlas till elektrisk energi och kan anv\u00e4ndas som elektrisk kraft av en extern last enligt diagrammet.
